In Tenerife astro physics have their star watch station at the Teide Observatory also called OT.
It is an observatory of importance for star and, above all, solar watch.

The Tenerife sun is special and also a great asset for holidays in Tenerife.

This astronomy Center by Mount Teide works closely with Tenerife university La Laguna physics department.

Tenerife solar observations are, indeed, of particular importance for NASA as well as for international science and European astro physics and solar physics, in particular.

In fact, the astronomy event was for the official opening of the additional Canary Island Observatory Roques de los Muchachos on Island La Palma.

My friend Guenther Dahmen told me the following story connected with this break-through for star watches which is very interesting for Tenerife history of La Paz(Peace) in Puerto de la Cruz:

Here we must not forget that much building had been going on in the south of the island by Los Gigantes and Las Americas since the mid Seventies which consequently took a big chunk of Puerto Cruz tourism away.

On that day in 1985 all European dignities had to stay over in Tenerife because, the Island La Palma had no suitable hotel, as yet.

The only hotel which could handle accommodation and VIP service for this big Tenerife event was Hotel Botánico Puerto Cruz in La Paz at that time because the only other option, the former Hotel Taoro, in Taoro Park was Casino, then.

Note other facts of importance for Tenerife history Puerto de la Cruz and its development in the context of this scientific star watch event... In 1985, Hotel Botánico was still surrounded by banana plantations. One of those farms, Abaco mansion, became a museum later. Park Botánico (Jardin Botánico) was the only tourist attraction in La Paz, in those days.

Before the astro physics event, normal tourists who wanted to stay at the elite Hotel Botánico all had to be issued with special security stickers, weeks before, when they booked their hotel stay. They had to wear them all the time to enter and move within Botánico Hotel while famous guests were there.

Nowadays, by the way, its hotel guests also may watch moon, stars and beautiful Tenerife sundowns in a charming park with stunning look-out at the end of the church place of the historical Chapel Hermita San Amaro.

And this at only 10 minutes walk from Botánico Hotel in La Paz Puerto Cruz without telescopes... Don't miss it when on Tenerife vacation...

On this day June, 29, my friend Mr.Dahmen and his late wife saw Queen Sofia from Spain, Queen Beatrix from Holland, Queen Silvia from Sweden and other royal Europeans. All the celebrities attended the astro physics event of 1985. They had to get to nearby La Palma Island to attend the astro physics observatory inauguration ceremony Roques de los Muchachos by helicopter.
Later they were flown back to La Paz.
Of course, onlookers could only glimpse the dignities from a safe distance, as security patrols kept them back.

My German friend also noticed Germany's former Bundespresident Richard von Weizsaecker, although Germany joined the professional European astronomy community of the Canary Islands later. Nobody of European rank was missing.

Sleepy little La Paz, suddenly, was humming with many European dignities and people with money and influence.

This was so exciting for everybody, said my friend Guenther who came to Tenerife on holiday, for the first time in 1972, and never missed any of its winter events.

Property investment Tenerife in La Paz, suddenly, was the hottest thing to do after 29th of June 1985.

Restaurants and Supermercado 2000 Spar followed. Charming, colonial style Canary Center with many boutiques and shops were added. Opposite Jardín Botanico the landmark Cupola Center with large parking space and many offices, agencies and more shops was constructed.

This is how an astro physics event of La Palma for the important Observatory Roques de Los Muchachos set La Paz Puerto Cruz firmly onto the tourist map and helped greatly for Tenerife business as well.

The astronomy event La Palma was the occasion when the potential for a new suburb and upper class resort was discovered.

Kindly note, there is a "day of the open door" in June every year when everybody can visit Observatory Teide for Astro Physics. Going there on your own without understanding Spanish will, however not be in your best interest, Mr.Dahmen told me.

He also added he had no chance to look through the famous OT telescope.

By the way, the Cabilde (government) of Tenerife ordered all communities on the island to, only, use street lamps whose lights can be dimmed and must never face up, when they install new lights. Reason for this is, because street lamps and lampposts which shine up into the night sky may interfere with best visibility during star and sun observations for Tenerife's astronomy researches.
