Why Buenavista del Norte has much more than its fishing village charm today.
Buenavista del Norte, the small town by the sea of Isla Baja took me by surprise. I was in company of a tourist friend. He had fallen in love with the fishing enclave's serendipidity. It is still off the beaten track, you know... My friend would have loved nothing more than renting one of the little white, blue or red cottages in the first line by the ocean. We walked along the neat water front promenade.
There, we came upon an unusual street art Buenavista del Norte trophy. It looked like it was dedicated to the local fishing folks. A tourist was posing by it. A fish on a spiralled hook is attached on top of the sculpture. However, we could not detect one single real estate agent. A kind woman suggested that we may try to get relevant information at the local pharmacy. Long term holiday rental demand Isla Baja:No luck for us... A year ago, A British couple was searching for winter rental there. They wanted to play golf at Buenavista del Norte. ('There, golfing offers the best challenges of the whole Tenerife Island', wrote a German sports magazin in early 2011.) The resorts further down south on the other side of the Teno Mountain massif didn't appeal to UK visitors last year. They would have considered the whole Isla Baja for accommodation. In the end, they found something. It's on my to do list to ask them how they liked staying there. A local woman pointed out a neat double story square house for us. She said that it had two separate apartments, but seemed to be for rent as one unity for € 600/month. Anyway, the house for rent was not close enough to the sea for my companion. Well, my friend will certainly find his little Tenerife beach house in the Internet. World class accommodation:By the way, it's good to know that there is the fantastic Hotel San Roque for golf players near Buenavista. It's in the beautiful little town called Garachico, whose long awaited yacht harbor is being build right now. I have seen its works in progress in April 2011. In case that your budget is very restricted, go for an alternative of the 3 star, but genuine country hotel Hotel rural Finca La Hacienda Tenerife at Los Silos by Buenavista.
A healthy, unpolluted green country:Look at the Tenerife Isla Baja, a great part of which is depicted beside. This photo was taken a few years ago by César F. Real Real. Many white roofs of greenhouses show up on this fertile farm land by Los Silos, Buenavista del Norte and el Tanque. However, nowadays similar structures on those farms look even bigger. We also learned that the white greenhouse roofs are treated with something to repell insects and to help bananas and tomatoes grow faster. Remarkable good agriculture Buenavista Tenerife:Otherwise, the local farms, namely Fincas in Tenerife by Buenavista grow just about everything to render the whole fertile and green Isla Baja region self sufficient for all basic produce. A bit of Portugal on Tenerife's north coast:Coming to think of the fishing and farming town by the Teno mountain range the following comes to my mind: It is true that Buenavista de Norte with its 34 km long coast line has some Portuguese character. Indeed, they say that it had its fair share of Portuguese colonists. The small town reminds me less the Algarve but some Atlantic hamlets, such as Aveira in the North of Lisbon. More interesting places by Buenavista:There is much more to do around Buenavista del Norte. Proceed on the motorway TF445 via Punta de Fraile to go see the Buenavista lighthouse by Punta de Teno, which is quite close but not an easy drive. Los Silos is an interesting town in the neigbourhood. By its waterfront find Lido pools at the beach Playa Agua Dulce, which is a good place to eat out. There is also a gigantic whale fossil. Go meditate or day- dream by the natural swimming pool of Don Gabido... All those are lovely sightseeing options, all in the same spot. Also consult the map Buenavista Norte to get to any attractions in the Rural Teno National Park. Want to do best cycling training? Returning from Buenavista to Garachico for crossing Teno rural and Teno Alto:The fastest way from Garachico or from Icod de los Vinos to Los Gigantes is via the TF82 and then the TF454 from Tamaimo. Proceeding from Santiago del Teide on the TF82 instead takes you all the way to Tenerife South. Bueanvista within Teno National ParkNotice that Buenavista comprises much more than what meets the eye. 69,4% of all 8.063,6 hectares of the Teno Country Park belong to that small town. That also makes El Palmar as well as the tourist favorite Masca part of Buenavista del Norte. Also all ancient Macaronesian Laurisilva forests and low indigenous shrubs with herbal perfume by the Water Mountain (Monte del Agua) are part of the same regional administration. Old Teno and Isla Baja customs:Needless to say is that the Isla Baja as well as Teno park region has preserved many an old custom, such as dances which date back to the Guanches. Then there are old songs and festivities. Some of the pre-conquest rituals were slightly changed and simply received the name of a Christian Saint. Fiesta de las Libreas de El Palmar:The fiesta de las libreas which has the topic of getting rid of the devil could just as well come from any archaic culture in the world. It's celebrated by the spectacle of a male and female actor. Both are clad in according costumes and take part in a dance ceremony on a town square. The devils are symbolically set alight with much fire cracker noise, while they are chased around. This means to cleanse them of the evil they could cause to others. However, there are more interesting facts about the Fiesta de las Libreas. The Libreas festival should take place again during the last two weeks of September, to the best of my knowledge.
