Candelaria's pilgrimage town yesterday, today and tomorrow

Candelaria with its terrain of 48,52 km2 is famous for its apparition and honoring of the Tenerife black Madonna. Indeed, the location was already a place of her homage by the Guanches, 104 years, prior to Tenerife's conquest by Spain. In fact, that was before the spot not far from a beach called Chimisay today known as Playa Socorro was named after the Latin expression for chandelier. The reason for that name was a multiple light. It was illuminating the cave of the mysterious black Madonna of the Guanches day and night. Old Guanche pilgrims' trails Indeed, many old Guanche trails were leading to the place of worship of the statue of Chimisay of Guimar. Some are being cleared now from bush overgrowth for eager pilgrims. There is big demand for it by the walkers who often come from the capital Santa Cruz or from San Christóbal de la Laguna. Those Guanche pilgrimage routes of the forests to the west of Candelaria are still needed to be marked in international maps for walking in Tenerife off the beaten track.
