Charcos belong to the most typical of Tenerife's landscapes. They are an outstanding geological phenomen and merit more explanations. Their meaning which helped me to classify them as rockpools was first explained to me by my friend César. He is a native from Valencia Spain who explained the Tenerife charco beach characteristics to me in Castellano Spanish.
Disover the charcos of Garachico, many of which are the most stunning and picturesque natural swimming pools together with other natural pools of Tenerife. See them or even count them with the birds-eye view depicted beside. Geological coastal aspect Garachico charcosBy the way, the coastal look of Garachico with its charco cliffs is nothing like the geology by El Medano's eastcoast, where the rocks are rather flat, while those all over the Tenerife Westcoast are dark in color. Again, it is very astounding, how an almost black rockpool landscape can happen on one and the same island. Tenerife island is most unique, indeed.
Charco beach vegetationMind that the geological charco miracle of Garachico came about during the Trevejo eruption of 1706. That is not long ago. Even beach vegetation grows by charco borders and between the black volcanic surface of this seafront. It is not moss, as is rather normal, but other low Tenerife Tibaiba and succulents. The plants smoothen and color the ground in the most unusual and natural way. The rockpools called charcos or el Caletón Garachico are another example of natural wonders of the biggest Canary Island. How pronounce the charco word in its plural form?Ch equals ch in catch, ar is said in the same way as ar in Harbor, while the r is a little rolled, unless you speak Tinerfeño of the mountains. The c is pronounced k like in UK Note that c is always like k in UK when a dark vocal, like a, o and u follows and os well you know, I would guess, so the os like in ostracize. Got it? Now say it. please... Hence repeat ch ar c os... Even judge their dimentions more or less by comparing them to the cars, which you see on the coastal road beside... Charco pools may have salt water, rain water, sweet water, or they may contain any odd liquid. Charco basins are not neccessarily totally sealed from all sides. They are open on top, though. These natural pools of Garachico, most of which let enter Atlantic ocean water are called Caletón in that town. What's a caletón? A caletón isn't as easy to translate, as it may seem. I would explain it as a secluded delta, where one could hide something in many little charco bays. Caletón derives from caleta. A caleta is a small naturally protected half enclosed location by the seashore within the ocean. A caletón always has many small rock outcrops or an accumulation of volcanic rocks in ocean water by the Tenerife coasts. I haven't seen any of this in mainland Spain. It is also unknown in Portugal. However you will find it by volcanic islands. Hence, charco enclosures and caletóns belong to terms of the volcanology rather which has its special language everywhere. So how say caletón?Ca is like in Café here remember c with dark vocallet is prononounced like the English verb let on with an accent on top is said like on as in on top in English. Hence pronounce 'ca let on' for the Spanish caletón

UK charco pools near seasides.:Nevertheless a couple of years ago, I read some homepage about natural pools at the UK coast, where not all were filled with salt water from the sea. Others, a little further inland were once created by the ocean, dried up and contain sweet water now. They were too tiny to merit the definition lagunes. The Plaza del Charco de los Camarones:This center court yard of the Puerto de la Cruz de Tenerife hub was once a charco or natural pool. Some elderly Spaniards say, that there were as many a charco in that spot, as you may imagine. But that's hearsay, you know... Charco de los Camarones means pool of crabs, Indeed, many of them are still close by at the town's Muelle which is a long quay of the oldest Tenerife resort.
