Why was yesterday's small economy crisis in the whole of Tenerife not avoidable?
You may have heard about the economy crisis on March 26, 2009, which put almost the entire Tenerife Island to a standstill. However, you may not worry if you are not living in Tenerife. You would be preoccupied, if you already bought holidays to Tenerife.
Not to worry... It's all over now, but questions remain. Such an economy crisis by electricity supply cut is bad publicity for the island's tourism, for sure. How can lightening wipe out a huge electricity net with supply and leave too many households stranded? What kind of electric infrastructure can't even fight off a small cyclone, as it was called? Of course, the crisis wasn't 100 per cent, as many in Tenerife use gaz in their homes. This gaz supply truck below my building makes it easy to believe. Figure an electric tram stopped in an intersection by electricity failure...This wasn't shown in television. I wonder if it happened. When even a minor economy crisis surges in the 2nd biggest Tenerife town San Christobal de la Laguna as well, then all Media will ask questions, eventually. Not to forget is, the electricity power generator plant is by Candelaria, not far from La Laguna. Weather in Tenerife crisis big News of March 27, 2009 Of course, meantime the Canaries weather, we had yesterday provided first news. The reports made it look like Tenerife suffered from a tropical rain down-poor. Rainy scenes of Cran Canaria with Las Palmas and most other isles of the archipelago were broadcast under similar conditions of heavy rain. Not all was true, as I published in Canary Islands weather. However, what television called a weather crisis kept the public a little distracted from the resulting electricity catastrophy. UNELCO, Tenerife electricity provider:An interview with the director of Unelco, the electricity supplier for Tenerife, made me think. José Manuel de la Cruz, of UNELCO was mighty low key, when he was interviewed in television. Did he look like a scolded child or did he give the impression for being so sorry for all the people on the island, who needed electricity? How was it possible that such major power cut could occur to cause a Tenerife economy crisis? When he said in Canary television news, electricity infra structure needed improving with better wiring, I couldn't believe my ears. Questions to yesterday's failure of electricity supply:- Quality inspection for electric power plant?
- Why leave proof of quality of an electricity net to a weather test?
- Why no quality priority given to major electricity wires?
- Why can a small thunderstorm cause electricity power generation havoc?
- What would countries do, which really have big cyclones,
tornadoes, floods and the like? - Who is supposed to help Tenerife with a real economy crisis
which is not due to an electricity crisis or even a global crisis?
Many an electric tram of Tenerife stopped. Most restaurants could not serve lunches and not even coffe. Electric shop tills were not working any more. Chemists and Tenerife hospitals had electricity problems due to the power cut. All I assume is, that they have electric power generators in theaters. Visualize many a tourist in a rented holiday home in Tenerife... They often don't have a telephone, when they stay for short time. Such people on Tenerife holidays may have really felt deserted and in crisis. AMS money supply machines were not operating which may be disastrous, when no bank is nearby. Certainly, much was depicted in details by Tenerife and Canary Islands' television, yesterday and the day after.Just figure the economy crisis on Tenerife airports, golf courses, in hotels, schools, production places and service industries...It was announced by a TV broadcasting yesterday night, that fathers may take their kids to school again on Friday 27th of March. Parents should consider the electricity crisis, which lasted 6 hours, as over and dealt with. Those were not the exact words, but the meaning of them. Not everybody suffered from lack of Tenerife electricity too muchSome Tenerife people might have been happy, not to have to work. However, the man who needs every minute to earn some pennies would call 6 hours without electricity, which he could not do without, an economy crisis. I could do something else than working on my computer, which suddenly went dead. However, the time without electricity and any hot drink and warm meal seemed to last an eternity. I was craving some real food, soon. Besides, I was even affrayed to open the fridge. Groceries could deteriorate inside it, if power was not coming back soon. To know that the whole island was stranded without electricity and had an economy crisis was unbelievable to me, at first. President Paulino RiveroThinking about all this I was amazed that I wasn't the only person that asked more questions about yesterday's economy crisis caused by lack of electricity. President of the Canary Islands Paulino Rivero has indeed many questions for the Director of UNELCO, the Tenerife electricity company. This was reported by El Dia Newspaper on March 27, 2009. It was also said there or in other news that Tenerife with its 420 000 electricity customers had a right to explanations. I am also under the impression that much of Tenerife infrastructure is more subsidized for electricity, for example, than other Canary Islands. This may stir bad feelings in politics. This is not good when there is an economy crisis, either. What I especially liked about Paulino Rivero's remarks was, that electricity supply fall out in big countries as well. He, however, emphasized that this was no excuse to let it happen in Tenerife. Now, I fear that electricity tariffs of &euro 0,11248 per kWh with a basic charge of&euro 9,03 per month of electricity prices will go up again, soon. Those electricity rates are not very high for a big household. They are expensive for a single pensioner, while retirees in Tenerife have only a tiny budget to themselves, often. Why is an eventual electricity price increase troublesome? The answer is, the little person like you and me always has to bear the brunt for increased cost of living, you know... People will be sensitive to higher electricity prices. An increase for the cost of electricity in Tenerife came into affect beginning of 2009, a mere 2 or 3 months ago. Why must Spanish or Tenerife restaurants avoid an economy crisis? You know, Spanish restaurants, shops and workshops, malls as well as department stores are those, which still keep Spanish banks and Cajas afloat, naturally. After what happened with hedge fonds and the real estate crash... Cajas are kind of Savings banks for possible check book accounts. This whole part of Spanish business is called Minoristas by accountants and economists in Spain. They are differently classified than Renault Spain car manufacture, for example. However, all those Spanish business sectors are very important for the economy Spain and must help to avoid a crisis. Spanish news on big business Spain, such as Tenerife restaurants and their economy crisis and if yes, can it be avoided? Will the economy suffer after the environmental policy regarding anti smoking has become law on first of January 2011? New business-ideas by La Ventita are in sharp contrast to the 2011 recession, while disregarding the possibility of an economy crisis. Up to Top?
