See to believe the guys on endurance cycling Tenerife...

Endurance cycling is something I am reminded of often. Why? I see cyclists in La Longuera, parts of which are rather steep. For example, the track after the Hotel Panoramica Gardens has an impressive height. Then come C/San Agostin Realejos and further up the climb of 1300m to Madre Juana by the Cepsa petrol station on the way to Icod del Alto by the mountain road TF342 from Los Realejos. Or perhaps, up the mountains with the winding Cordilera road in the Canadas del Teide... Hitting the bicycle pedals up there means conquering an altitude of over 2000 meters on two wheels. Good lungs and a strong heart are priorities.
Indeed, you see those champions on two wheels without engines often enough to believe that all this is just a question of constant sports practice high above sea level.A good diet is priority, while also the mind needs training to face such Tenerife altitude challenges on bicycles. I discovered young cyclists taking a break of endurance cycling by the wall of the lookout Baracán between Buenavista del Norte and Masca. That route takes you past La Palmar with 830m and 1005m by the viewpoint after leaving the Teno Alto with its 794m at a distance. Herbal spring flowers put their dainty heads over the wall with spring greetings and an amazing spicy perfume.
A heavenly view indeed from the Vista Baracan lookout for endurance cyclists to be blessed with... Then, the way continues towards Masca which is rumoured to have been a pirates' hideout. No need to ride down into the hamlet, if you didn't want to buy Tenerife Tenerife souvenirs Masca but, continue straight to Santiago del Teide. By the way, Masca's baranco gorge is not suited for cycling, not even with fat tires, I would say. Important reminder regarding Masca:Avoid biking by Masca where parking can become a real issue besides its parkometer money machine by the wayside which was made for Pesetas. Week-ends and holidays are sure no brainers. The roads from and to the most picturesque mountain village of Tenerife are simply too crowded by cars then. Mind not only tourists love this tropical hamlet. It's also a favorite for mountain climbers and alpinists. Romantic but capricious Masca landscape:
Shown beside is a panorama of the TF-436 Masca Cycling track to give you some idea of the difficulty of the terrain. From Santiago del Teide onwards, the road TF 454 leads almost all the way down the hill to Los Gigantes. Alternatively, ride back to Buenavista del Norte. All these tracks are worth the training and fulfill all the challenges of endurance cycling for altitudes. How far from Buenavista to the giant cliffs? The distance from Buenavista to Los Gigantes is about 30 km, to the best of my knowledge, but certainly feels like almost double because of the partly winding or very steep motorway which must be endured by a cyclist.Anyway, see the cycling route options to Masca and beyond for yourself in the map Buenavista Norte. This is not off road cycling which in this particular case may be less streneous compared to riding on mountainous asphalt. Mind that Tour de France cyclists who train at Mont Venton as well as other world cycling champions are coming all the way to Tenerife to improve cycling performance with healthy thin air altitude conditions. Mountain biking tips:Much depends of course on your motives for endurance cycling. Bikers who cycle for fun, for weight control and or better health may not be interested in improving performance and speed. Anyway, cycling means exercising and sport. All sports should be handled wisely. Anyway, a pulse and blood pressure reader are important for all sportsmen even for fun riders. A bike computer helps much but can't be used in all terrains, but is a must for endurance cycling home exercises. They are a must read for healthy as well as for endurance cyling by Masca, by Mount Teide, on Realejos hills, up La Guancha from San Juan de la Rambla or in the Anaga mountains. Look at some breath taking Los Realejos heights and guess what cycling or mountain biking there may be like... Return to Tenerife attractions.
