I once, read some poetry in Valenciano Spanish in the village of Tormos near Denia in Spain. Its language was different to Castillano, although, not very big. One could still catch most of the meaning. We may therefore rather classify Valenciano as a Spanish dialect. Reading any Spanish was always easier for me than understandingbecause of my Latin studies at school. My friend Cesar F.Real Real who was born and brought up in Valencia agrees with me about this. Spoken Valenciano, however, is a different story compared to written Valenciano because it's even harder to comprehend for a foreigner. César, sometimes, uses strange Spanish expressions with me. They, then, leave me wondering because, they contain words which I wouldn't find in any dictionary. When I don't understand, he laughs and says that this is Valenciano Spanish. Of course, it would be rather impossible to find such language in a normal Spanish or better said Castellano dictionary. The dictionary I would recommend to have at home is Concise Collins dictionary, by the way. It's a big heavy volume.
