The Spanish language, what's important to know and what may strike us as funny or peculiar.

When speaking of the Spanish language, today, we always mean Castellano which is High Spanish the correct way to speak and write it.

I had to point out the latter for you which will make you understand the following incident.

Suddenly, a 3rd person corrected and commented that I don't speak Spanish but, Castellano.

I mention this because, many a Spaniard is very proud of speaking Castellano and doesn't like it when Spanish and Castellano
are not differentiated. Those people love to rub it in that charming Tenerife Spanish isn't perfect.

On the other hand, a Mallorquin (native of Mallorca Spain) will seldom be happy if his way of Speaking Spanish is called Spanish.This is what my friend César experienced in Mallorca, recently, and which he took for granted. Much Catalan Spanish is spoken there or, even, Mayorquín also written Mallorquín.

You know the saying Black sheep of a family in English.

In Tenerife this is said differently
and will always be Cabra negra de una familia meaning black goat of a family.

Guess why!

Expressions and language peculiarities depend very much on locations. So?

The explanation is that there are no sheep in Tenerife but, lots of goats.

The latter is an example of what makes a language.

Nevertheless, Spanish is one of easiest languages to learn because it originates by about 80% from Latin which is very logic and, was carried over during ancient Rome's empire shortly after the Cartago wars. Latin was spread by its soldiers with different dialects resulting in a different language in France, Portugal and Spain.

Castellano, also, represents modern Spanish Nobel prize literature and, was declared leading world Spanish in Madrid in 1978.

Castellano is the Spanish used by major world Spanish Media like newspapers and television and most Spanish Home-pages as well as Spanish Blogs in the Internet. I'ts also one of official languages of the world UNO. (United Nations Organization)

I must emphasize the last facts which have been cited multiple times before I do it again here but, they are important because of what I would like to express next.

There, language is becoming like Spanish SMS cellular telephone Spanish and it's hard to adapt to for all conservative speakers. Shortening a language in Chat Spanish" as is done with SMS messages in Spanish is crippling, you know... Besides, this might conduce negative evolution of the Spanish language Castellano, in years to come.

Valenciano Spanish from Valencia region:

Did you know that Valenciano Spanish has its own peculiarities, expressions and words?

I once, read some poetry in Valenciano Spanish in the village of Tormos near Denia in Spain. Its language was different to Castillano, although, not very big. One could still catch most of the meaning. We may therefore rather classify Valenciano as a Spanish dialect.

Reading any Spanish was always easier for me than understandingbecause of my Latin studies at school.

My friend Cesar F.Real Real who was born and brought up in Valencia agrees with me about this.

Spoken Valenciano, however, is a different story compared to written Valenciano because it's even harder to comprehend for a foreigner.

César, sometimes, uses strange Spanish expressions with me.

They, then, leave me wondering because, they contain words which I wouldn't find in any dictionary. When I don't understand, he laughs and says that this is Valenciano Spanish. Of course, it would be rather impossible to find such language in a normal Spanish or better said Castellano dictionary.

The dictionary I would recommend to have at home is Concise Collins dictionary, by the way.

It's a big heavy volume.
