Who would have thought that Los Gigantes Tenerife is so full of fantastic surprises?

Los Gigantes Tenerife means Giants Tenerife in Spanish.

Enormous beings in fairy tales and, in legends are also called gigantes in Spain.

So, where is the town of the magic cliffs?

It's situated 2/3 down from top of the island on the map on the west coast.

You may also look at the Tenerife map.

The Guanches, the known first inhabitants of Tenerife, who worshiped everything "super-natural" looked at those Giant cliffs with "religious" awe. Tenerife history of the town of the dark rocks in general and for tourism is far less sensational than that of the capital of course. But, exciting tourismhistory makes up for it. A list of historic places is included.

Only what is known from the past of the old manor
Casa del Patio
is rather intriguing.

So is the old legendary church La Ermita de Santiago which treasures beautiful drawings.

cliffs los gigantes The mostly rugged cliffs rise from a depth of 30 m in the ocean bed and scrape the clouds at times by a height of 700 m. They are part of the Teno mountain range. which is ideal for hikes and even walk being so close to the town.

The most romantic village of Tenerife called Masca is also in the Teno district although one would reach it or by boat or via Santiago del Teide. It's easy to go there for an afternoon tea. Hiking in Masca is a different story because it may be a challenge to climb up behind the village and descend down to the sea shore. A day trip should be planned for that.

Tenerife mount Teide (3700 m high) is not much further away than a good hour by car and is a great attraction in the far back of the town. You may also plan your own Teide excursions with some detailed explanations that include access to it from different areas of the island.

The cliffs flank the town on the right.

All settlements in the area belong to the district of Santiago del Teide which had not more than 9200 inhabitants, a little while ago.

It has the same name like the town that is to be

found less than half an hour from Los Gigantes.

In reality the town looks much bigger because, it belongs to a tourist resort where Puerto de Santiago and Playa La Arena are part of. Note:
The town is partly build on flat ground and partly on steep hills. Bare this in mind, please, before you book a holiday home on line.

The town is rather modern in most parts where houses seldom have more than 2 stories. Cluster apartment blocks change with townhouses where older ones are found mainly by the town square. You will see some reproduction Canary style architecture which is rather nice where I mention my friend's resort property for sale and also list and describe the biggest festivities in the area.

Ocean sports conquests for local youngsters also happen at that time.

Hotel Los Gigantes Tenerife Isla Cangrejo Here, you may see Hotel
Los Gigantes
(opened 1973)
in the picture by César
Francisco Real Real.

It's the oldest hotel in the
region.

The luxury Tenerife villas
are part of the suburb by
Isla de Cangrejos .Many a holiday home is in
this prestige suburb.

Right next to it is also
the Lido Los Gigantes saltwater swimming pool which is practically bordering the ocean on one side.

Another public pool called Oasis is also nearby.

Several beaches along this coast invite for a great vacation. None of them are big.The one where my friend stays is rather nice for the kids. It even has a blue flag.
Did you know that the best beach by Puerto de Santiago is Playa la Arena? It's also known for its good tourist information center.

One day my friend Cesar invited me and an other friend for a trip from Puerto de la Cruz down to his sea shore by the giant cliffs.
He did not take us to any of the southern beaches.

So, where did my good pal César take us?

What are the other plus points for Los Gigantes or Puerto de Santiago?

Why two names now?

My friend keeps on assuring me that basically both places are the same because, both grew into each other.

Night life

There are no discos or nightclubs in my special southern Tenerife town. Hotels there, of course, offer night entertainment for tourists. They would, surely, also welcome others.

But, you know, should you decide to go further south for a wild night out it takes only 20 to 30 minutes by car...

port or marina los gigantes tenerife The Tenerife Marina of Los Gigantes is nothing like the one you might have seen in Monaco.

However, there is quite a bit special about it. Please, go find out all about the well known yacht harbor by the town of the giant cliffs..

25% of space of the Marina is reserved for temporary staying yachts, by the way.

sports club in los gigantes tenerife The Sports club Los Gigantes also called the Harbor clubLos Gigantes is of course off limits for whoever is not a member.

Tenerife water sports:

Huge rewards by deep sea fishing may be expected in the wide open ocean by the big rocks.

36 different species of whales and dolphins live there.

Whale watching off the coast of Los Gigantes is not to be missed. Locals as well as foreigners should have an encounter with those mammals at least once. A list of day trips where some go twice daily to take you to whales and dolphins is included.

Best nearest Tenerife golf clubs

  • 18 hole golf course is Abama Golf in Guilla de Isora
    Tel: 922 126000 or, Tel: 922 126621.
  • Buena Vista Golf (18 holes) a must for serious golfers.
    Tel: 922 1290 34 or, Tel: 922 128044.

Los Gigantes has of course also a good Tenerife scuba diving school

Some time ago, I did an unforgettable Tenerife tour on the Atlantic leaving by the giant rocks.

Gastronomy
Restaurants, bistros, pubs and bars for socializing, even outside the Marina.

You get international as well as good local cuisine.

Even some English food may be bought.

Try the sea food at:
Meson de los Pescadores
Agustín León
Telephone: 922 867 046

Seafood is said to be very fresh. One of the local good fish dishes is called 'la Vieja'. Try it with the wrinkled potatoes papas arugadas and mojo picon (hot red sauce)... By the way, the price for those special potatoes is about Eu 6,-/kg on the market as per spring 2008.

Not to forget for eating out is:
The Harbour Club Los Gigantes.

bistro San Francisco los gigantes tenerife The Spanish love eating out like at San Francisco Bistro or just having a "copa", a glass of something or, a chat away from home.

That’s the Spanish way of life and part of Tenerife culture..

Some bars and, pubs are often humming until the wee hours of the morning with locked doors and people partying inside.

Shopping

Should you have a self contained holiday home you will have no problem with shopping.
There are several good shops for groceries. The supermarkets called "El Transito" which form a chain are very much to be recommended. They are very well stocked. They also cater for more Northern European tastes. The nearest Mercadona is in La Arena.

Los Christianos and, Los Gigantes are only about 30 minutes further down south. That's fast for a break.

There is of course the hub with shops, bars, bistros and "whatnot" in Los Gigantes. By the old church, of course...

There are no large shopping malls, though.

oldtimer taxi Naturally, all those near tourist resorts in the south are reachable by taxis. Los Gigantes is not short of them.

Tenerife night life is affordable for a tourist staying in Los Gigantes;
taxis are not expensive to take you, safely, to the nearest hot spot on the coast.

May it stay that way!

But, I would make friends with one local taxi driver, In case of having a few too many.

Who wants to be taken advantage off?

By the way, there is no Tenerife hospital close by.. But, you will find a Centro de Salud (health center)there; for emergencies for example. Los Gigantes, however, is not that small. Perhaps, there is no space for a hospital left. They will build another big hospital for Tenerife in Los Christianos which is 30 min.away. Somebody said it would take an hour by car to the capital. I doubt that with today's traffic and, I would rather count with at least 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Tenerife agriculture in and around Los Gigantes:

  • vegetables
  • tomatoes
  • bananas
  • nursery seedlings and,
    other nursery plant products

Tenerife industry in los Gigantes
"Nope", nothing...
And who wants industry pollution?

There isn't any industry unless you think fishing on a small scale is an industry. But it´s nothing really commercial. No food packing factory is there. Fresh fish is most probably being sold to local restaurants and hotels. May be to the supermarkets...

Weather:

Some say that the coastal region by the giant cliffs has the best climate in Tenerife.

It is fairly mild to warm in winter with 17C-25C and, rarely warmer than 28C in summer. The Spanish tourists in July/August will confirm that. Day light is 10,5 per day on average which means extra long sunshine for a holiday in Tenerife.

For what and for whom is the region of the magic cliffs most suited for?

It means that Los Gigantes in Tenerife may be an ideal option for a holiday home in Tenerife. It's especially suited for family holidays, for couples or for a groups of friends. But, a bachelor or, a spinster with a yacht may never be lonelyI know a German guy with a boat there. He found himself a young Spanish mate quickly, there.

Holiday accommodation

Traditional hotels as well as more luxury hotels are catering for tourists.

Many a private holiday home in Tenerife is found in the whole district of Santiago del Teide but, most of them in Los Gigantes. Many are for rent.

Here too, a fair variety is available.

Many a luxury self catering apartment is available for self catering in Los Gigantes or, Puerto de Santiago.

Of course, the cheapest is usually something that accommodates more people, no matter what you are renting. The cheaper places have usually backpacker standard.

The Exchange rate to EU for people from the UK keeps on changing. Please, check it out with xe.com Universal Currency converter...

  • Eucalypthus trail
  • Baugainvillea square
  • Cuevas del Infierno (devils caves) with nature reserve
  • Mirador del Cherfe in Valle de Arriba)(view point)
with 1100 m altitude. Pinar, Mazca and, Teide may be seen from it.

It would definitely make it worthwhile for pensioners to have their own holiday home in Tenerife in Los Gigantes or, Puerto de Santiago.
The fact that UK hasn't joined the Euro brings already one good advantage for English holiday makers as well as for the British retired folks in Tenerife. Never mind the good weather... Also IGic which is kind of a value added tax or, GST is quite low in Tenerife. Petrol is also much cheaper. Although, some imported goods carry extra freight, harbor handling and, other charges the hard earned English pounds buy a much better life style in Tenerife.

You will find more useful info on the town of the giant cliffs and, its surroundings, also, with photos not seen, here, with data on my friend César's apartment direct sale.

You may also go straight to the photo gallery on the apartment.
