Who would have thought that Los Gigantes Tenerife is so full of fantastic surprises?

Page copy protected against web site content infringement by Copyscape exception below...

Los Gigantes Tenerife means Giants Tenerife in Spanish.

Enormous beings in fairy tales and, in legends are also called gigantes in Spain.

So, where is the town of the magic cliffs?

It's situated 2/3 down from top of the island on the map on the west coast.

It's 45 km from the south airport. You need about 1,5 hours to drive to Puerto de la Cruz and also about 1,5 hours to the capital via TF1. It would take much longer via Santiago del Teide and Puerto de la Cruz.

Here, the nicest Los Gigantes town map, I have discovered.

You may also look at the Tenerife map.

The Guanches, the known first inhabitants of Tenerife, who worshiped everything "super-natural" looked at those Giant cliffs with "religious" awe. Tenerife history of the town of the dark rocks in general is far less sensational than that of the capital of course. But, exciting tourism history makes up for it. A list of historic places is included.

Only what is known from the past of the old manor
Casa del Patio
is rather intriguing.

So is the old legendary church La Ermita de Santiago which treasures beautiful drawings.

cliffs los gigantes The mostly rugged cliffs rise from a depth of 30 m in the ocean bed and scrape the clouds at times by a height of 700 m. They are part of the often virgen Teno mountain range, which is ideal for eco tourism such as hiking, diving and walking in Tenerife.

The most romantic village of Tenerife called Masca where you find lovely Tenerife souvenirs is also in the Teno district. Reach it from Los Gigantes by car or by boat or via Santiago del Teide town. By the way, the whole county, where the town of the giant cliffs is part of, is known by that name, too.

Tenerife mount Teide (3700 m high) is not much further away than a good hour by car and is a great attraction in the far back of the town. Join a Teide tour from the town of the awesome cliffs or do your own Teide excursions with some detailed explanations that include access to it from different areas of the island...

The cliffs flank the town on the right.

All settlements in the area belong to the district of Santiago del Teide which had not more than 9200 inhabitants, a little while ago.

It has the same name like the town that is to be found less than half an hour from Los Gigantes.

In reality the town looks much bigger because, it belongs to a tourist resort where Puerto de Santiago and Playa La Arena are part of. Note:
The town is partly build on flat ground and partly on steep hills. Bare this in mind, please, before you book a holiday home on line.

The town is rather modern in most parts where houses seldom have more than 2 stories. Cluster apartment blocks change with townhouses where older ones are found mainly by the town square. You will see some reproduction Canary style architecture which is rather nice where I mention my friend's resort property for sale and also list and describe the biggest festivities in the area.

Ocean sports conquests for local youngsters also happen at that time.

Hotel Stil Los Gigantes Tenerife Isla Cangrejo Discover Hotel Los Gigantes in this picture by César Francisco Real Real to the right of Crab Island(isla congrejos)

It's one of best 4 star hotels Tenerife in the region for holidays in Tenerife.

Many a holiday home is in this prestige suburb.

Admire the lush vegetation in this quiet place...

Hotel Barcelo Santiago for relaxing holidays:

Oasis Park Los Gigantes pools Tenerife Right next to the Barcelo is also the Los Gigantes
the Lido saltwater swimming pool which is practically bordering the ocean on one side.

The seashore Oasis park with lovely pool, bistro and bar in paradise setting is right beside it.

Needless to say is that the Barceló resort is amazing?

Why?
Although it has over 400 rooms of innovative design with a mixture of cool and bright colors you will not feel claustrophobic in this holiday haven. Apartments are rather spaced out and are not all stuffed into one big tower. Nevertheless, views from it are breath taking.

Hotel Barcelo Santiago Puerto de Santiago Los Gigantes The hotel Barcelo Santiago by the giant cliffs has the most fantastic sundowns of La Gomera as the photo shows. Let your little children ride Barceló hotel toy bikes and other plastic vehicles on their own safe playground high above the ocean. Lounge at leisure at the Barcelo Hotel Santiago bar swimming pool, from where you may easily keep an eye on them. Take your older children to the rock pools Los Gigantes Crab Island for snorkeling and diving...
Hotel Santiago Barcelo with private bistro beside It is just a few steps below the hotel Santiago Barcelo Gigantes, which has beautiful waterfall landscaping on a big scale. How do I know this? One day, my friend Cesar invited me and an other friend for a trip from Puerto de la Cruz down to his sea shore by the giant cliffs.
He did not take us to any of the southern beaches. The natural rock pools, called charcos in Spanish, were exactly, what he had in mind. Learn more about this ideal family hotel Hotel Barcelo Puerto Santiago, select its best Tenerife deals from its different hotel rates and book it...

So many Tenerife things to do by the giant cliffs:

Thrilling whale watching trips leave several times a day from the harbour of the giant cliffs.

Several beaches along this coast invite for a great vacation. None of them are big. The one where my friend stays is rather nice for the kids. It even has a blue flag.
Did you know that the best beach by Puerto de Santiago is Playa la Arena? It's also known for its good tourist information center.

Expect more family fun by a half an hours' drive to southern huge seaside golf courses. On Tenerife Costa Adeje, let the kids play minigolf, do banji jumping, ride gocarts, jump with trampolins and hire them water toys...

What are the other plus points for Los Gigantes or Puerto de Santiago?

Why two names now?

My friend keeps on assuring me that, basically, both places are the same as, both grew into each other.

Night life by the giant cliffs:

There is tourist restaurant and bar entertainment in Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes, nowadays. However, enjoy many free live concerts by the town's hotel events...

But, you know, should you decide to go further south for family trips or for a wild night out, it takes only 20 to 30 minutes by car.

port or marina los gigantes tenerife The Tenerife Marina of Los Gigantes is nothing like the one you might have seen in Monaco.

However, there is quite a bit special about it. Please, go find out all about the well known yacht harbor by the town of the giant cliffs...

25% of space of the Marina is reserved for temporary staying yachts, by the way.

sports club in los gigantes tenerife The Sports club Los Gigantes also called the Harbor clubLos Gigantes is of course off limits for whoever is not a member.

Tenerife water sports:

Huge rewards by deep sea fishing may be expected in the wide open ocean by the big rocks. Do sailing and take part in regattas, windsurfing, parasurfing, speedboat rides, cut the waves with waterskies, swim, snorkel and practice deapsea diving.

36 different species of whales and dolphins live on the Tenerife west coast between La Gomera and Los Gigantes.

Consult a list of day trips to see the mammals, while some boats go twice daily for the price of one trip. Or better still join organized tours....

  • Buena Vista Golf on the other side of the cliffs (18 holes)is a must for serious golfers.

Some time ago, I did an unforgettable Tenerife tour on the Atlantic leaving by the giant rocks.

Bistro San Francisco Los Gigantes

Eating out by the dark cliffs called Gigantes:

The harbor club is a good option and so are several small inns where the yachts are. Many a small bar anywhere in town caters for the British and serves you English breakfast or even fish and chips. Some bars and pubs are often celebrating something when they should be closed. They lock doors and party for carnival or a soccer victory of the day.

Try the fresh sea food at Meson de los Pescadores in street CalleAgustín León. Call first at 922 867 046...

Sample a dish named La Vieja with typical salt coated, but tasty small Tenerife potatoes which are served with their skin. They are forever dished up with little bowls of a green herbal sauce and a red one called Mojo Picon. The red Chilly pepper renders the latter rather spicy. You can order French fries in most Los Gigantes places, instead of Arrugadas. Pizza and pastas have almost become national Tenerife dishes, you will find in almost all eating houses by the steep, gigantic cliffs. If you don't fancy seafood, go for rabbit (conejo) which I prefer a la salmorela... Or pick beef fillet called Solomillo, which you can find fast by its top price...If you love stews, pick Buchero which is rich in local vegetables and often contains beef and chicken together.

Be cautious, where you order fresh Calamares. It might be served with the blue ink of this seafood. But, that is rare.Tapas, Spanish food cocktail dishes or starters are safe to order almost anywhere. Be careful with tortillas (Spanish egg pancakes) which may sometimes taste bland. Many restaurants Los Gigantes serve international cuisine as well, while they may affirm you, they invented stuffed green peppers.

Supermercado supermarket Los Gigantes

Shopping

Should you have a self contained holiday home in Tenerife you will have no problem with shopping Los Gigantes.
There are several good shops and many a small supermercado (supermarket)to buy groceries. The supermarkets called "El Transito" which form a chain are very much to be recommended. They are very well stocked. They also cater for more Northern European tastes and also stock many a UK grocery like baked beans, except Peanut butter. The nearest Mercadona is in La Arena, close by. There are no large shopping malls, though.

Living costs by the giant cliffs is cheap. Luxury taxes and VAT called IGIC is even lower than on mainland Spain with 5% instead of 6 %. Petrol has always been very affordable in Tenerife and is still sold for about €0,90 for a liter. Some imported goods are more expensive. However, your hard earned English pounds buy a better life style in Los Gigantes.

The best of all nowadays is, you can buy frequent, cheap flights Tenerife back and forth or one way, so you will always be mobile to travel overseas from Los Gigantes.

Transport, taxis and transfer Los Gigantes:

The green public Titsa buses serve the town well and from there the whole island. Only on week-ends and holidays they may disappoint you somehow.

It is important to reserve Tenerife transfer from the TFS airport to the town of the magnificent cliffs.

Naturally, all the red light districts with their action in the south are reachable by taxis. Los Gigantes is not short of them.

Tenerife night life is affordable for a tourist by the Tenerife west coast;
taxis are not expensive to take you, safely, to its nearest hot spot.

May it stay that way!

Los Gigantes taxi Make friends with one of the local drivers of a Los Gigantes taxi, in case of having a few beers too many.

Who wants to be taken advantage off, as seen by this episode of Tenerife airport taxis, when one was not booked in advance?

By the way, the next hospital for the town of the awesome cliffs is in Los Christianos, which reach in 20-30 minutes. Somebody said it would take an hour by car to the capital. I doubt that with today's traffic and, I would rather count with at least 1 hour and 20 minutes. Be from Gigantes town at TFS airport within 25 minutes...

Tenerife agriculture Los Gigantes:

  • vegetables
  • tomatoes
  • bananas
  • nursery seedlings and,
    other nursery plant products

Tenerife industry in los Gigantes
"Nope", nothing...
And who wants industry pollution?

There isn't any industry unless you think fishing on a small scale is an industry. But it´s nothing really commercial. No food packing factory is there. Fresh fish is most probably being sold to local restaurants and hotels. May be to the supermarkets...

Weather:

Some say that the coastal region by the giant cliffs has the best climate in Tenerife which is also much appreciated by foreign pensioners.

It is fairly mild to warm in winter with 17C-25C and, rarely warmer than 28C in summer. The Spanish tourists in July/August will confirm that. Day light is 10,5 per day on average which means extra long sunshine for a holiday in Tenerife.

For what and for whom is the region of the magic cliffs most suited for?

It means that Los Gigantes in Tenerife may be an ideal option for a holiday home in Tenerife. It's especially suited for family holidays, for couples or for a groups of friends. But, a bachelor or, a spinster with a yacht may never be lonelyI know a German guy with a boat there. He found himself a young Spanish mate quickly, there.
