What I love most at La Estrella Azul

La Estrella Azul in Puerto de la Cruz is really special. It serves a stew that is very healthy and mouth watering good. Indeed, it is the most representative Canary Island meal for me contrary to the simple but, good Papas Arrugadas with Mojos where protein plays no part.

La Estrella Azul which translates to The Blue Star is a medium sized family restaurant about hundred meters from the main town square of the hub in the old quarters of Puerto de la Cruz. It's also only a mere 200 m from the new Titsa bus station.

Its value for money delicious Canary Island and Tenerife cuisine is very recommendable. My favorite is its Puchero Canario that nowadays is hard to find in most Tenerife restaurants, above all in tourist zones.

There was a change of ownership and management on January first 2020 while general prices and Puchero Canario on the Friday agenda are like before. I shall keep you posted of a different quality and service, ASAP, just in case.

You can eat with more privacy in a dining room on the first floor that I had never seen although I have been to this excellent restaurant of local cuisine several times for the last twenty years.

The ground floor space of this eatery is smaller than its first floor premises but there's a cozy bar. You can glimpse the lady of the house in the kitchen from there. The street terrace outside is on a slightly sloping ground. It is popular for smokers and for all who like to watch the world go by. Toilets are clean and the service of this laid back restaurant of the oldest Tenerife resort is very friendly. This eatery dates back to the Seventies to the best of my knowledge. Hence, it stood the test of time.
I also remember a lovely elderly gentleman a family member of this Tenerife North business. He used to come to eat there every day and sat often on a bench nearby to read a paper. He has long gone by the looks of it. He was very friendly and was much loved by everybody.

What is Puchero Canario of La Estrella Azul?

It is a very healthy stew where different meats, such as poultry, pork and beef are added to water to  be cooked together. Various vegetables follow at different stages depending on how much time they need to get done without becoming soggy.

My ingredients for the typical Canary stew with a small twist

  • 1kg fairly lean soup meat
  • 1/2 kg pork meat
  • 1/2 kg poultry with drum sticks, preferrable
  • 400g chick peas that were soaked over night
  • 4 peeled onions halved
  • Sweet corn cobs (like 1/2 a cob per person)
  • Fresh dried or powdered chilli or black pepper according to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon dash of grated ginger
  • 2 dried laural leaves

Add all this to plenty water until half cooked.
Than join the following vegetables:

  • 1/2 kg Zuccini cut into thick slices
  • 1/2 kg Pumpkin  cubed
  • A peace of Yam optional
  • 8 medium sized carrots
  • 1/2 a cubed cabbage

Add about 30 minutes later

  • 1 kg potatoes
  • 1 kg sweet potatoes
  • 2 large bunches of entire green beans

Prepare a little thick sauce in a pan
with oil, garlic and 3 crushed cloves which add to the stew
and let it all come to the boil once. Take care not to burn the garlic.

  • 4 large, peeled pears may be added last while a few small Pine apple slices are an additional option

Mind you may leave out chillies and can serve Mojo Picon on the side. Buy it best at the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de Africa the main fresh produce market in the Tenerife capital.

Buen aprovecho, as they say in Spanish
Mind this recipee was not given to me by the Blue Star Restaurant.

Why the Puchero Canario stew has become the theme for a famous culinary Tenerife event in La Florida of La Orotava that attracts thousands every year
